The jobs of being a seamstress or a cook were probably the most common out of all the jobs that women had, and they were all fairly safe roles in the Revolutionary War, although not always the easiest. People think the men had the hard part in the war, well women's jobs could be just as hard and dangerous at times.
Before the Revolutionary War these types of jobs were done by men during the time of the war, but men assumed since the women were used to doing these jobs in there household they would be well acquitted for the job. They got women who were following the army with their loved ones (these women were called camp followers) to step in for the male soldiers.

Women were mostly all capable of cooking, cleaning, and sewing but a famous woman seamstress that made history is known as Betsy Ross. Her and her husband had their own business that she took over when he died.
Most women during the war only cooked for there families. Men in the war usually cooked for themselves unless the women were following there husbands throughout the war. One women in particular named Sarah Osborn, is known for cooking only one mile away from the battle of Yorktown behind the American soldiers line. She brought the soldiers food while they were fighting in the battle. She said, "It would not do for the men to fight and starve too."
Most women owned their own sewing shop. Women in the household kept it simple only sewing the basic clothing that her family needed. The clothing could potentially see up to thirty years of use before getting rid of it. Jackets were made by a person of more knowledge of sewing known as a seamstress. Jackets were often used more for the soldiers. Women with the knowledge and talent to sew well enough would mend the soldiers uniforms and even sew their uniform completely from scratch.
